Trust in Mac

Posted: April 14th, 2008 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Tags: , , , | Comments

Apple logoI just purchased my first Mac a few weeks ago after approximately 15 years as a staunch PC user. I wanted a small laptop and didn’t care about gaming on the go. I was admittedly seduced by curiosity (not to mention that damn glowing Apple logo- Curse you vile temptress!). Here I am, not even two months into this crazy experiment and already with some startling results; the most startling is that I whole-heartedly prefer and would recommend a Mac to any computer user except a gamer.

10 Essential Portable Apps

Posted: August 23rd, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

You may not realize it, but your USB flash drive is really much more than a high-capacity floppy disk. Why? Because you can run applications from it! A great way to get started is the Portable Apps Suite which comes with a great set of programs and a cool menu for your flash drive. There are, however, lots of applications available that can be run portably. These are the cream of the crop. Read the rest of this entry »

The Greatest Firefox Extensions Evar!

Posted: August 21st, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

I’m setting up a copy of Firefox on my USB flash drive. As a result, I’m having to re-evaluate the extensions I will be running. I think I run a pretty good set of extensions right now. I get quite a bit of use out of everything I run. Many of them are indispensable! I’m not as minimalist as some. I try a lot of extensions, but I periodically try to purge the extensions which aren’t getting much use. Here’s a list of those I’m currently running: Read the rest of this entry »

Discovery of Drupal

Posted: August 9th, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

I’m not missing or giving up on the blog. What I am doing is working on the wheresitmade site. Specifically, I am trying out a CMS called Drupal. It’s a very robust system, and I’m sure it is capable of making the site what I want it to be. The only question which remains unanswered is whether I am capable. Only time will tell.

I have a Drupal install up and running, and I’m setting up my development environment. Most of the functionality I need is in the Drupal core, but I am going to have to play a little to get everything I want. For the benefit of any other users trying or considering Drupal, I will provide the resources I have found helpful. Read the rest of this entry »

$200 Laptop

Posted: August 1st, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

I hope this laptop becomes a reality. If it does, it will probably make computers accessible to many people who could not afford them previously. I love the size. I don’t want a laptop with a 15″ monitor. I also don’t like the current trend of putting a highly reflective coating on the screen of every laptop that is manufactured. Judging from the pictures, it looks as though this monitor has the flat-finished screen I love. Keep your eyes open for this.

Posted: July 25th, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

TwitterI’m trying Twitter which allows you to tell people what you’re doing. It has been called a “micro-blog.” Each post can be no more than 140 characters. I’m also trying their desktop app, twitteroo, which helps you keep track of people even when your browser isn’t open. Come on and join! It’s free to join. Once you join, follow raddevon to get updates about what I’m doing for the blog before you see it online! I’ll also tell about other stuff I’m doing, and I’ll check out what you’re doing. See you there!

Roll your own blog

Posted: July 19th, 2007 | Author: raddevon | Filed under: Tech | Comments

This is my first post exclusive to this version of the blog! I also blog at Vox.

I started this blogging experiment just a few days ago. I wanted to get something going quick so I went the blog farm route. I tried LiveJournal, WordPress, and Vox. The first two were trying so hard to sell upgrades. I went with Vox which was pretty cool. I think it’s ad-supported, but, being an Adblock Plus user, I didn’t have to worry about that. I liked the selection of themes, and their community is really great. I did, however, notice some problems. Text colors are persistent for the remainder of the post after you have colored even just one word, and it doesn’t matter if the word is in the middle of your post so far. All the text you add after coloring some will retain that color. There’s no way to remove text formatting which would have been an easy fix for the aforementioned problem. Phantom spacing between paragraphs and at the end of the post often manifests upon editing. The sidebar widgets cannot be rearranged. It’s nothing major… just a lot of minor annoyances.

I decided to try to host my own. Read the rest of this entry »
